Cinnamon Roll Tea Ring~Christmas Morning delight!

I have just about baked myself out!!   I am definitely ready to hang up my apron for a bit!  We recently were invited to eat at a friends home. Given the frugal bent I am on now days wanted to gift something to the hostess but did not want to spend a lot of money.  I wanted the gift to say WOW did you make that and taste good also.

My sister and I have often talked about the fact that our mother taught us how to bake, but did not really teach us how to put a meal together.  With that I struggled for the first years of our marriage.  My hubby still reminds me of the first time I sent a boiled egg to work with him...lets just say it was not pretty!

I also participated in 4-H as a kid and baking was a big part of that experience.  Still alas I did not learn how to plan or put a meal together!

This cinnamon roll Tea Ring reminds me of the yeast bread that I had made for 4-H so many years ago.  The secret to this dough is using a dough paddle with a mixer and mixing it for 10 minutes.  The whole thing is ready in 90 minutes!

It does make a pretty presentation and the best part is pretty simple to do!  I used honey over the dough and softened butter.  For the presentation it was placed on a large red plate, iced, and then a piece of silk holly (which I had on hands) placed at the top.  If you are looking to wow your guests you might give this yeast bread cinnamon roll tea ring a try!  It is pretty tasty with a cup of tea of course or some mocha coffee, which you can find my recipe here.

Preparation time: 30 minutes +dough raise
Cook time:  25 minutes
Serves 8-10

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ Cups of warm water (105-115) Make sure the water is not too hot.  A good test is check the tap water on the wrist and if it feels warm it is good to go!
  • 1 Tablespoon Honey
  • 1 Packet of Active-dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoon)
  • 2 Tablespoons Canola Oil
  • 4 Cups of bread flour or unbleached flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
Filling
  • Softened butter  ½ cup (1 stick)
  • 6 Tablespoons of Honey
  • 1 Tablespoon of cinnamon or to taste
  • Nuts if desired
Icing:
  • 1 ½  cups sifted powdered sugar
  • ¾ teaspoon vanilla
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon to 5 tablespoon Milk or enough to make a thick glaze.  Only add 1 Tablespoon at a time to desired consistency.

Directions

  1. In your mixer bowl add warm water, honey, and yeast.  Stir a bit until honey dissolves.  Once the yeast starts foaming (at about 5 minutes), add flour, oil, salt.
  2. Use the dough hook on the mixer and mix on low to start with and then turn up to medium and knead for 10 minutes.  Leave the dough in the mixer bowl and cover with a warm towel.  Let the dough rise for 30 minutes.
  3. Remove the dough from the mixer bowl and place on a lightly floured board.  Knead the dough until it is no longer sticky with a bit of flour.
  4. Roll the dough on the floured surface with a rolling pin in the shape of a rectangle.  I made mine approximately a 9 x 13 inch rectangle.
  5. Spread the softened butter onto the surface of the dough with a table knife.
  6. Spread the honey over the dough.
  7. Dust the dough with the cinnamon or to taste.  The more cinnamon the stronger the taste.
  8. If desired place nuts of choice over dough.
  9. Roll up the dough from on the long side into a log.
  10. Stretch the dough and form into a ring.
  11. Mold the two ends together so that the seam of the dough comes together nicely.
  12. Place a piece of parchment paper onto the baking pan of choice.  I used a round pizza pan to bake mine.
  13. Gently move the dough ring onto the parchment paper.
  14. Take a clean pair of scissors and cut into the dough at the outer edge, making sure not to cut in clear through.
  15. Make the cuts every 1 ½ inches clear around the ring.
  16. Let raise another 30-45 minutes
  17. Bake  25 minutes at 400 degrees.  (Be sure oven is preheated prior to placing in the oven.)
  18. Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 30 minutes.
  19. Place on the desired serving plate
  20. Mix the icing glaze and drizzle over the bread….it smells and tastes so yummy!
Enjoy!!
