A Basket for any Occasion~Sew a Unique Fabric wreath basket holder

I wanted a unique way to hold my wreath and decided a basket in the colors that matched the wreath might work.  It makes a perfect way to hold the wreath. It looks very soft and pretty sitting on the window sill or in the laundry room.  It has a coastal feel and the fabric coral flowers and aqua blue color are uniquely hand dyed.

The great part about making your own basket is it can be custom made to the size you want or need.

In order to make the basket, choose the dimensions that you need or want.  Cut a heavy weight cardboard box into five sections.  The bottom of the basket is the length and width which you have chosen.  The sides and the end of the basket are the length of the sides and the ends.  For the height decide how tall you want the basket to be and then make the sides and the ends width this size.  I happened to make mine 12 inches long, 6 inches wide, and four inches tall.

Choose your fabric and then cut it 3/4 inch larger all the way around of each cardboard piece.  You will need to cut two sets of fabric.  One is to line the inside of the basket.

Sew the sides and ends to the bottom of the basket.  Repeat for the lining.  Make a piping by cutting a strip of contrasting fabric the length all the way around your basket and 2 inches wide.  Cut the fabric on the bias then fold the fabric in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and press.  Sew the piping around the outside edge of the basket.

Place the lining with right sides together with the actual basket.  Sew all the way around the top of the basket, but be sure to leave one end open.  Turn the fabric right sides out and then carefully press the lining to the inside of the Basket.   Fit the cardboard into the open end, one piece at a time.  Be sure there is a snug fit when the cardboard has been inserted.  Slip stitch the opening closed and enjoy your new handmade basket.

There are many versatile uses for the basket.  As above I used mine as a wreath holder.  This one is so bright and cheerful it could be used for just about anything!  Happy creating!
